About Quitting

What if my child wants to quit?

When asked this question by parents, my answer is always the same; children don't quit, parents let them quit. They did not make the decision to join on their own and they should not be allowed to make the decision to quit on their own. The most common responses by a parent when faced with their child wanting to quit is, "I don't want to force him/her to go" or "my parents made me, as a child, do activities I did not like."

As a parent, I ask you why not help them set and keep goals? Is it bad to make a child strive for better in his/her life?

Some psychologists say it's bad to have children commit to things they don't like, well then making your child go to school is bad if they don’t want to go. Is it prudent to allow a child to make a decision based on whether or not Playstation is a better use of time than academic or life education?

You make your children/child get up in the morning, brush his/her teeth, go to school, do homework, go to sleep, do chores, learn manners and everything else that you know is good for his/her future.  Commitment and responsibility is needed in leadership development and success.

We, as parents, are here for one major reason, to get our children ready for their futures. ATC's proven program gives children the edge by teaching them determination and drive to be successful in this world. Let’s face reality, when they grow up and get a job, they won’t be able to work for most employers since they might have to do a task or duty they don’t like, and they will quit. Our children will get married and when things become challenging, they will get divorced like so many adults before them because their parents allowed them to quit everything that seemed too difficult.

Martial arts at ATC is an education first, then a sport.  It teaches a student how to handle their emotions and negativity's. Why do children want to quit something that they once loved or were interested in?  Normally it's because the activity has become more of a challenge than they thought it would be, and they take the easiest way out which is to just quit. Sometimes the parent can’t find the time to be involved or bring the child. An unmotivated parent equals an unmotivated child.

It is sad to see children give up because they never find out how good they could have been. They never reach their maximum potential in anything and end up taking one more step in developing a negative future and never learning determination, perseverance or dedication, not to mention showing they are in charge instead of the parent.

Balance your child's total developmental needs with education and activity goals. Reclaim the "decision authority" for your child's welfare. Monitor your own parental motivation by asking, "How will this education or activity affect my child’s future?" Will the benefit of me making my child stay, out shadow the few negative aspects of sticking with things and not quitting?"

Will my child benefit from more self discipline, self confidence, self control, improved grades, while learning perseverance, determination, team work and protecting the knowledge gained in life by learning self defense and staying fit?

Remember martial arts is more than kicking and punching and it takes time to learn any art form like martial arts, dance, music, gymnastics and painting.

"Am I doing this for myself or my child?" "Am I just tired of driving my child?" "Is the money worth all the benefits gained?"

DON’T QUIT ( Author Unknown)

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is strange with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a person turns about
When they might have won had they stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow-
You may succeed with just one more blow.

Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to that golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out-
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit-
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

KEEP SWIMMING (author unknown)

Two frogs fell into a deep cream bowl.
One was an optimistic soul.
But the other took the gloomy view.
“ We’ll drown,” he lamented without much ado,
and with a last despairing cry,
he flung up his legs and said, “Goodbye.”

Quote the other frog with a steadfast grin,
“ I can’t get out but I won’t give in,
I’ll just swim around till my strength is spent,
Then I’ll die the more content.”
Bravely he swam to work his scheme,
And his struggles began to churn the cream.

The more he swam, his legs a flutter,
The more the cream turned into butter.
On top of the butter at last he stopped,
And out of the bowl he gaily hopped.

What is the moral” It’s easily found…
If you can’t hop out, keep swimming around!

Story:   “Dig a little deeper”

A story is told about two brothers who sold all they had back East and headed West for the promise of great riches during the California gold rush. Early on in their prospecting, they discovered a vein of the shining ore, staked a claim and proceeded to get down to the serious business of getting the gold ore out of their mine. At first, all went well and their spirits and bank account soared. But then a very strange thing happened. The vein of gold that they were working on mysteriously disappeared. It just simply dried up. They were at the end of their rainbow and that pot at the end was suddenly very much empty. However, the brothers continued to desperately pick away, but without much success. Finally they got discouraged and gave up in disgust.

They sold all of their equipment and claim rights for a few hundred dollars and took a train back home. The man who bought the claim hired an engineer to examine the rock strata of the mine. The engineer advised him to continue digging in exactly the same spot as the former owners had, but to dig a little bit deeper. A week or two later and three feet deeper, the new owner struck gold, a huge, lucrative vein! Instantly he became a wealthy man beyond his wildest dreams.

Just a little more persistence and a little more deeper digging and the brothers would have reaped the same reward. There’s gold in you too. You have unlimited ability, untapped potential. You have the ability to do things you never imagined. Just because you haven’t found that potential yet doesn’t mean it’s not there. You have to be persistent. You have to be patient.
